What are value bets and how AI finds the edge
Over the long run, sports analytics is not about picking the winner. It is about finding value: when the odds are higher than they should be for the real probability. Here is what that means.
What value is
Value shows up when your estimate of a result's probability is higher than the one baked into the odds. In plain terms, the bookmaker underrated that result and the price is too high for the real risk.
The value formula
Above zero means you have an edge. Example: you rate a result at 55% (0.55) and the odds are 2.00. Value = 0.55 × 2.00 − 1 = +0.10, a +10% edge. At odds of 1.70: 0.55 × 1.70 − 1 = −0.065 — no edge, bad bet.
Why value beats guessing
You can hit 6 of 10 and still lose money taking short odds. You can hit fewer, always with an edge, and finish ahead. What decides it is the math edge on each bet, not the hit rate.
How to find value
You need two things:
- the real probability, the market read after devig;
- an independent estimate of the result, a model or deep analysis.
